About the SPCA

Since 1916, the Roanoke Valley SPCA has been the leading advocate for the homeless and unwanted animals of the area. For many years the facility operated out of an old farmhouse, located on 13th Street in Roanoke. Outdated and located in a flood plain, it was obvious that the facility was not meeting our needs nor those of the animals we had been charged with serving.

Working with local governments and civic leaders, a public/private partnership was created to develop an animal care complex. Extensive planning went into the development of the cooperative concept that would best serve the citizens of the Roanoke Valley. The functions of the RVSPCA are divided into two components; the Barbara & Warner Dalhouse Adoption & Eduction Center and the Regional Center for Animal Control & Protection.

The Adoption & Education Center, which opened in February, 2004, is designed to provide for the care of homeless, adoptable animals while they wait for adoption into permanent, long-term homes. Our goal is to provide healthy, well adjusted animals for those seeking to add a pet to their family. All animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Vaccinations are brought up to date and beginning in July, 2007, animals will receive rabbies vaccination and will be microchipped.

The RSPCA relies on the generosity of the community for the funding neccessary to provide care for the animals through donations, bequests, fundraisers and memberships.

The Regional Center for Animal Control & Protection serves as the animal control facility for the City of Roanoke, Roanoke County, Botetourt County, and the Town of Vinton. The four governmental agencies contribute the funding necessary to care for stray and owner relinquished animals.

The facility opened in February, 2003 at 1340 Baldwin Avenue, Roanoke.
