Local Licensing & Pet Limits

The different localities in the Roanoke Valley have different licensing requirements for companion pets as well as different limitations on the number of pets an individual household may possess.

Roanoke City

  • All animals registered on or before December 31st of each year with the City Treasurer's Office, 540/853-2521.
  • One year registration: $10/animal ($5 discount with proof of spay/neuter). Three year registration: $25/animal ($10 discount with proof of spay/neuter)
  • Pet Limits: 4 dogs - 6 cats (if all sterilized)

Roanoke County

  • All animals registered on or before December 31st of each year with the County Treasurer's Office, 540/772-2056.
  • One year registration: $10/animal ($5 discount with proof of spay/neuter). Three year registration: $27.50/animal ($13.50 discount with proof of spay/neuter)
  • Pet Limits: 3 dogs - 6 cats (4 must be sterilized)

Botetourt County

  • All animals registered on or before December 31st of each year with the County Treasurer's Office, 540/473-8254.
  • One year registration: $10/animal ($5 discount with proof of spay/neuter). Three year registration: $25/animal ($10 discount with proof of spay/neuter)
  • Pet Limits: 4 dogs – No limit on cats     **Troutville has a limit of 4 cats**

City of Salem

  • All animals registered on or before December 31st of each year with the City Treasurer's Office, 540/375-3024.
  • One year registration: $10/animal ($3 discount with proof of spay/neuter)                              
  • Pet Limits: 3 dogs – 2 cats    

Town of Vinton

  • All animals registered on or before December 31st of each year with the Treasurer's Office, 540/983-0608.
  • One year registration: $7.50/animal ($3 discount with proof of spay/neuter)                              
  • Pet Limits: 2 pets total
