When Kira first arrived at the Roanoke Valley SPCA back in April, her situation was heartbreaking. She had been semi-abandoned — left behind without the care, stability, or love every dog deserves.
Like many rescue dogs in Virginia, Kira struggled at first. She could be destructive, chewing things she shouldn’t. Even our staff, who adored her, noticed she was becoming increasingly anxious and nippy. We started her on anxiety medication to help her cope — but we knew what she truly needed wasn’t in a bottle. She needed a home.
We introduced Kira to many potential adopters, but her high energy and overwhelmed demeanor in the shelter made it hard for people to see the sweet, affectionate dog we knew she was. Each time she was passed over, our hearts sank a little more.
Then came August.
During an adoption event at our Roanoke animal shelter, a woman walked in and asked to meet Kira. We had been through this before, so while we were hopeful, we tempered our expectations. But the moment Kira met her, everything changed.
Her face lit up. Her tail wagged nonstop. For the first time in months, Kira looked completely at peace. It was a perfect match.
Now, Kira is thriving in her loving home — no more reactivity, no more stress, just pure joy. Her adopter tells us that Kira spends her days chasing tennis balls, cuddling on the couch, and greeting everyone she meets with love and excitement.
Kira’s transformation reminds us that it’s not always about finding the perfect dog — it’s about giving a good dog the chance to be her best self in the right environment.
Myths About Shelter Dogs — and the Truth Behind Them
Kira’s story shines a light on a common misconception: that dogs in shelters are somehow “less than.” In reality, animal shelters in Roanoke and across the country are full of incredible pets waiting for families to love them. Let’s bust a few of the biggest myths.
Myth #1: Shelter dogs have behavior problems.
Truth: Most dogs end up in shelters through no fault of their own — because their owners moved, faced financial hardship, or experienced major life changes. With patience and love, dogs like Kira thrive in a home environment.
Myth #2: You can’t find the kind of dog you want at a shelter.
Truth: Whether you’re looking to adopt a puppy in Roanoke, a playful young dog, or a calm senior companion, the Roanoke Valley SPCA has dogs of all breeds, sizes, and personalities. Your perfect match might be waiting behind our doors right now.
Myth #3: Rescue dogs won’t bond with new families.
Truth: Shelter dogs are often deeply grateful for a second chance. Once they feel safe, they form incredibly strong, lifelong bonds with their adopters — just like Kira did.
