Neuter is to de-sex an animal via castration or ovariohysterectomy.
Castration is the surgical excision or destruction of the gonads. Surgical male castration involves the removal of the testes or bilateral orchiectomy. This results in ending the ability to reproduce and diminishes behaviors related to the presence of testosterone.
Ovariohysterectomy (“Spay”) is the surgical excision of the ovaries and the uterus, as a means to prevent pregnancy and the occurrence of estrus or “heat” cycle.
