When Mystique first arrived at the Roanoke Valley SPCA, it was clear that life hadn’t been easy for her. This beautiful calico cat with striking green eyes was completely shut down—too scared to eat when people were near, too frightened to leave the safety of her hiding spot. Our staff and volunteers gave her gentle encouragement, but Mystique just couldn’t seem to settle in at the shelter.
That’s when one of our experienced cat fosters and Adoption Ambassadors stepped forward.
The Adoption Ambassador Program helps animals who struggle in the shelter environment by placing them temporarily in the homes of trained volunteers. These foster homes provide calm, comforting spaces where pets can decompress, show their true personalities, and prepare for adoption.
In her foster home, Mystique began to blossom. Within just a few days, the quiet, withdrawn cat we had seen in the shelter started to seek affection. She discovered the joy of soft blankets, warm laps, and chin scratches. Before long, Mystique was a full-fledged snuggler—and a devoted biscuit-maker!
Her foster mom knew Mystique would need a patient, understanding adopter. When the perfect match came along, the adopter was invited to visit Mystique a few times in her foster home to get to know her. This gradual introduction allowed Mystique to feel safe and secure, and when it was finally time for her to move into her new home, the transition went smoothly.
Even after adoption, our support didn’t stop. The Adoption Ambassador stayed in touch with Mystique’s new family, offering advice and encouragement as Mystique settled in. With a little time and love, she found her confidence—and her happily-ever-after.
