When a kind-hearted Good Samaritan found a tiny Siamese kitten with a very swollen, and badly infected eye, they didn’t hesitate to help. The little kitten, later named Si, was in obvious pain — his eye injury was severe, and he needed immediate veterinary care.

The finder wanted nothing more than to help Si heal and give him a loving home. But like so many caring pet owners, they were faced with an impossible choice: pay for unexpected and costly emergency surgery or risk Si’s suffering getting worse.

That’s when they discovered the Companion Animal Relief (C.A.Re.) Fund at the Roanoke Valley SPCA — a special program designed to help local families cover urgent veterinary expenses when they have nowhere else to turn.

They applied for assistance, and thanks to generous donors like you, their application was approved. Si received the surgery he desperately needed — an enucleation (eye removal) to relieve his pain and save his life.

Today, Si is thriving! He’s fully recovered, playful, pain-free, and deeply loved by his forever family. And because of the C.A.Re. Fund, he never had to enter a shelter. He got the medical care he needed and the home every animal deserves.

What Is the C.A.Re. Fund?

The Companion Animal Relief Fund helps people in our community who face unexpected veterinary emergencies and can’t afford the full cost of treatment. It keeps pets with their families, reduces surrenders to shelters, and prevents unnecessary suffering.

Every year, the Roanoke Valley SPCA receives over 200 requests for financial assistance for pet medical care — for everything from emergency surgeries and infections to injuries and chronic illnesses. Thanks to donor support, the C.A.Re. Fund has already helped hundreds of local pets like Si get the care they need to live long, healthy lives.

But the demand for help keeps growing.
