The Roanoke Valley SPCA is proud to partner with Pets for Patriots, a national organization dedicated to connecting veterans and Gold Star spouses with shelter pets in need of loving homes.
Pets for Patriots works with animal shelters and veterinary partners across the country to make adoption more accessible and sustainable for military families. Their mission is twofold: help pets most at risk of long-term homelessness find homes, and support veterans and their families through the powerful, healing bond of companion animals.
Who Is Eligible?
Veterans from World War II through active duty service members are eligible to apply, along with spouses of fallen service members. The program offers meaningful benefits designed to reduce financial barriers to adoption and help ensure long-term success for both pets and their people.
What We Offer Locally
As a participating shelter, the Roanoke Valley SPCA provides special benefits to Pets for Patriots members who adopt eligible companion animals:
-
50% off cat adoption fees
-
Two training services with every dog adoption
Eligible pets include:
-
Adult dogs and cats
-
Special needs pets
-
Long-term homeless animals
-
Dogs weighing 40+ pounds at the time of adoption
These are often the pets who wait the longest for homes — and through this partnership, they have an even greater chance of finding one.
More Than Just Adoption
This program is about more than discounted fees. It’s about honoring those who have served our country. It’s about helping pets who are most at risk of extended shelter stays. And it’s about creating life-changing bonds that benefit both people and animals.
Companion animals can offer comfort, routine, purpose, and unconditional love — qualities that can be especially meaningful for veterans and their families. At the same time, these adoptions give deserving shelter pets the second chance they’ve been waiting for.
