There are many ways to help the animals at the Roanoke Valley SPCA, both in the shelter and in our community! If you have the will, we have a way for you to volunteer. Follow these steps to get started:

1. Complete the Volunteer Application

To volunteer individually, you must be 16 years of age or older. Click here to fill out the Individual Volunteer Application. You can submit your application in-person at the Roanoke Valley SPCA during our business hours (Mon-Sat 12pm-7pm) or via email at volunteer@rvspca.org.

Volunteers between the ages of 10 and 15 must volunteer with an approved adult over 18 years old. If you are volunteering with someone who is 15 years old or younger, please complete the Family/Team Volunteer application. Click here to fill out the Family Volunteer Application. You can submit your application in-person at the Roanoke Valley SPCA during our business hours (Mon-Sat 12pm-7pm) or via email at volunteer@rvspca.org.

We have a separate form for Volunteer groups from local organizations, businesses, etc. The Roanoke Valley SPCA welcomes groups who want to donate their time to help animals! If your group is interested in volunteering as a group, please contact our Community Engagement Coordinator at edams@rvspca.org or 540-339-9503.

*Please note that the Roanoke Valley SPCA cannot assist with lawyer recommended or court-mandated community service hours.*

2. Pay a One-Time Volunteer Fee

For individuals, the volunteer fee is $15. For families/teams, the volunteer fee is $30. This fee helps to ensure that the vast majority of our funding is spent directly on animal care. Please understand that your volunteer fee is non-refundable and will be considered a contribution to the shelter even if you decide you are not interested in volunteering.

The fee covers the cost of your volunteer t-shirt(s), materials, and insurance. Volunteer t-shirts are awarded after completion of orientation and 4 hours of volunteer work!

The Individual fee is $15 and can be found at this link. The Family/Team fee is $30 and can be found at this link

3. Complete Volunteer Orientation

Once your application and fee have been submitted, you will receive a link for our online Volunteer Orientation and quiz. This virtual orientation can easily be completed at home and on your own schedule!

4. Get Started!

Depending on what volunteer activities you are interested in, additional training might be required. Schedule and attend all additional training classes as required for specific activities.

To remain active as a volunteer, we ask that you commit to 4 hours of volunteer work every month. Volunteer profiles are deactivated after 6 months of inactivity.

Please remember that all volunteers must bring a kind, open-minded, and non-judgmental attitude towards members of our community who are in need. We do not tolerate rudeness or discrimination when volunteers are representing the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

For more information on our volunteer program, contact our Community Engagement Coordinator at volunteer@rvspca.org or 540-339-9503.
