Volunteering at the Roanoke Valley SPCA is “heart” work!

There are many ways to help the animals at the Roanoke Valley SPCA, both in the shelter and in our community! If you have the will, we have a way for you to volunteer. Follow these steps to get started.

1. Complete the Volunteer Application

To volunteer individually, you must be 16 years of age or older. Click here to fill out the Individual Volunteer Application online.

Volunteers 15 years and younger must apply with a parent or legal guardian. If you are volunteering with someone who is 15 years old or younger, please complete the Family Volunteer application. Click here to fill out the Family Volunteer Application online.

We have a separate form for Group volunteering coming soon. The Roanoke Valley SPCA welcomes groups who want to donate their time to help animals! If your group is interested in volunteering as a group, please contact Erin Dams at edams@rvspca.org or 540-339-9503. *Please note that the Roanoke Valley SPCA cannot assist with lawyer recommended or court-mandated community service hours.*

2. Pay a One-Time Volunteer Fee

For individuals, the fee is $15 and for families, the fee is $30. This fee helps to ensure that the vast majority of our funding is spent directly on animal care. Please understand that your volunteer fee is non-refundable and will be considered a contribution to the shelter even if you decide you are not interested in volunteering.

The fee covers the cost of your volunteer t-shirt(s), materials, and insurance. Volunteer t-shirts are awarded after completion of orientation and 4 hours of volunteer work!

Click here to pay the registration fee.

3. Register for Volunteer Orientation

Once your application and fee have been submitted, you will receive an invitation to register for our monthly New Volunteer Orientation. Registration ahead of time is required to attend Volunteer Orientation! We also offer New Volunteer Orientation online making it easy to get started.

4. Get Started!

Please remember that all volunteers must bring a kind, open-minded, and non-judgmental attitude towards members of our community who are in need. We do not tolerate rudeness or discrimination when volunteers are representing the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

Depending on what volunteer activities you are interested in, additional training might be required. Schedule and attend all additional training classes as required for specific activities.

To remain active as a volunteer, you must commit to 4 hours of volunteer work every 6 months.
